John R. Koegel , P.T. DPT

My interest in the field of physical therapy began at the age of 18 following reconstructive surgery to my right shoulder after a fracture/dislocation suffered while snow skiing. I was enthralled with the technical aspects of the surgery; even more so with the post-operative rehabilitation process due to my drive to return to sports. I underwent the rigors of rehabilitation and enjoyed the fruits of my labors when I returned to the slopes the following season.
I received a Bachelors of Science in Physical Therapy in 1979 from California State University, Long Beach. I initially worked in a burn unit at Torrance Memorial Hospital but soon sought out a position in out-patient orthopedic care in my home town located in Orange County, CA. My move to Los Angeles occurred in 1985 when I had the opportunity to partner in a private practice PT setting with Alan Hinds, PT. I have since operated the clinic as a sole proprietor since his retirement in 1988.
My passion lies in the care of spinal and extremity cases either from a rehabilitative aspect, or from the corrective, preventative, or conditioning prospective. I have completed a year-long course in orthopedic manual care and returned to university life to complete a Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Boston University in 2007.
I am an active member in the American Physical Association (APTA), the Orthpedic Section of the APTA, the California Chapter of the APTA, and the California Private Practice Special Interest Group. I am interested in the laws governing the practice of physical therapy and have attended and addressed our state legislators in Sacramento regarding issues that will shape the future of the practice of physical therapy.
Our clinic specializes in the care of most every orthopedic condition, whether traumatically induced; acute or chronic, post-surgical, or preventative. We also treat a variety of neurologic issues. My staff eagerly awaits the opportunity to assist in any need that you present.

Richard Shen, DPT

Richard is a native of Southern California. Growing up he played competitive tennis in which he was ranked in Southern California in both singles and doubles. In high school he suffered an abdominal injury which possibly required surgery. Physical therapy was recommended by all the doctors as the most conservative and effective approach. Not only was he able to avoid surgery but he found a future occupation that he was passionate about. In going through therapy he saw the in depth knowledge of anatomy, biomechanics, and examination skills the therapist had. The combination of medical knowledge, exercise, and the ability to work with people in a fun environment made it the perfect profession for Richard.
Richard graduated from Azusa Pacific University in 2005 with a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. After school he completed 3 year long advance training programs in Orthopedics consisting of Kaiser Orthopedic Manual Therapy Fellowship 2008, Kaiser Orthopedic Movement Science Fellowship 2007, and Healthcare Partners Orthopedic Residency 2006. Richard was also part of the clinical faculty at Kaiser’s Orthopedic Residency Program. He is very active in sports and was lucky enough to intern with the Los Angeles Dodgers and treat professional volleyball players at the Manhattan Beach AVP tournament. Richard combines two unique approaches of in depth joint and muscle assessment to better understand your problem. He spends ample time educating his patients of their problem and how to manage it as he feels patient’s education is a powerful tool in their healing.

Althea Tan, PTA

Born and raised in the Philippines, Althea went to the University of Baguio, Philippines and completed 3 years of the 4 year Physical Therapy Program prior to moving to the United States at the age of 17. Althea later pursued Physical Therapy Assistant Program at Mount Saint Mary’s College and earned her Degree in 1998. She fulfilled her internships at UCLA Medical Center, USC University Hospital, Santa Monica-UCLA Hospital, Saint Joseph’s Medical Center, and at Olive View County Hospital prior to taking her CA Board Examination. Her passion for physical therapy started at the age of 15 when she got the chance to observe her mother’s rehabilitation process of treating a herniated disk injury that left her incapacitated for a few months and was advised to undergo a spinal surgery by her doctor with a prognosis of a 50%-50% of full recovery. Fortunately, through some colleagues, physical therapy was recommended to her mother as a safer approach. It was through physical therapy treatments that her mother was able to avoid surgery and was able to return to her normal daily activities. This experience fueled Althea’s interest to explore the field more and eventually found her calling and passion to help people in their healing process. Althea attended continuing education classes consisting of Intensive training on Trigger Points, Myofascial and Proprioceptive Therapy; Central Peripheral Connection Lower Quarter; Advanced Joint Mobilization Upper and Lower Quarter; Functional Capacity Evaluation Seminar, Balance and Core Stabilization; and Aquatic Rehabilitation Techniques for the Upper and Lower Quarter to broaden her techniques in serving the patients. Althea believes that being passionate for what you do, being in the right place and right company; one can make a difference.

Jay Ginsberg, PT Aide

I’ve had a passion for medicine for as long as I can remember. Growing up my father and I spent many summers performing amateur chemistry and physics experiments in our garage. He is a talented physician and it was under his guidance that I began to understand and appreciate the science behind these abstract ideas of health and wellness.
In high school I lettered in soccer, swimming and football- embracing sports as a means of both recreation and to keep fit and healthy. When I started college, I was immediately drawn to the field of Kinesiology, which allowed me to study the science of human movement and provided a wealth of career opportunities. I earned my B.S. in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Exercise Science from California State University Northridge.
Since graduating I have been working full time at John Koegel P.T. as an exercise technician and I am currently going through the application process to start Physical Therapy school next fall to earn my Doctorate in the field.
